Minpins did not originate from the Doberman as some may think. But they actually originated in
Germany many years prior to the Doberman. The breed standard was first recognized in 1880. It is
believed they are a cross of the Italian Greyhound, Daschund and the German Pincher. It is said the
breed was created for a ratter and has been used as such for over 300 years.

As a result these little dogs have a great deal of spirit and engage in all they do with much enthusiasm.
As the AKC breed standards describe the temperament of a Minpin: Fearless animation, complete
self-possession, and spirited presence. Minpins can be very affectionate and cuddly making great lap
companions for elderly and disabled.  These loyal little dogs are fearless protectors. They are bright
enough to avoid injury to themselves often outwitting would be attackers.

Minpins live well into their teens and retain their high energy driven vitality well into these later years.
Their long thin legs make them prone to injuries if not well monitored. Thus having toddlers or other
hazards around your Minpin could be dangerous. Although if well cared for and loved the Minpin will
provide a wonderful rewarding companionship. What more could anyone  wish for?
